What to do with your kid's 400th butterfly drawing: make it a Yoto icon
You know that guilty feeling when you bury your child's art in the recycling so they don't spot it? You can't keep it all, right? π Well, drawing #400 is now her Yoto icon.
Our daughter draws butterflies. Constantly. This one got a second life as the icon on her Make Your Own card instead. π¦ Here's the video, and how to do it with your own kid's drawing.
How to turn a drawing into a Yoto icon
We made Tinker for our family's Make Your Own cards, and this is one of the small, fun things it does. The whole thing took a couple minutes.
Take a photo of the drawing. Crop in close so it's mostly drawing, not table.
Drop it into a chat at https://tinker.audio/start. You don't need to sign in to try it.
Say what you want, the way you'd text a friend.
Pick one. It draws a few: some still, some that move. I went with the calmly flapping one.
Say which card it goes on. "Put it on her bug card." It finds the track, swaps the icon, and checks with you before anything saves. Your audio isn't touched.
Then for the fun part! Hand over their player and they can see their drawing come to life.
A few tips
Simple, bold drawings work best. At 16Γ16, a butterfly or a sun or a dinosaur comes out great. A whole scene with a house and a rainbow and three cats gets muddy.
You can ask for changes in plain words: "simpler", "more orange", "bigger wings".
Let them choose. Picking the winner from the few it draws is the best part for them.
Do the rest of the card. Once one icon's on, ask for icons for the other tracks to match, and the card looks like a set.
They don't have to live on a Yoto. Any icon downloads as a PNG, or a GIF if it moves.
Icons are the small, fun bit
Tinker also does the bigger jobs: splitting long recordings into tracks, drawing matching icons for every track, and gathering recordings from grandparents with a link.
If your kids have a drawing they'd love on a card, post it below and tell me how it went, or what it got wrong.
